Lorry Carrying Generator Set Destroyed by Fire on Sicily's SS 115

A lorry caught fire while in motion on the SS 115 in southern Sicily on Thursday morning, according to local reports dated 1 October 2026. The vehicle, a Scania carrying a generator set, was at kilometre 303 of the arterial road between Comiso and Vittoria, in the territory of Vittoria, when it began to burn at about 07:00. The driver noticed the flames, brought the vehicle to a stop and called for assistance. No injuries have been reported.

Two fire brigade crews responded. The detachment at Vittoria operated first, given its proximity to the scene; a second crew was then sent from the Ragusa provincial command with a tanker holding 8,000 litres of water. Accounts from the region describe a large fire, with a column of black smoke visible across several kilometres. The lorry and its load were destroyed.

Police from Comiso attended, though sources render the unit differently: the traffic police of Comiso in one account, Comiso police in others, and in one report as "Polizia di Ststo di Comiso", an apparent typographical rendering of the Polizia di Stato. The element common to the reports is the presence of officers from Comiso.

The road was closed to traffic for the duration of the operation to extinguish the fire and secure the vehicle, with reports of traffic slowing while crews worked. No source states when the carriageway reopened.

No cause for the ignition has been reported by any of the outlets covering the incident, and none of the available accounts establishes it. The absence of casualties is the only element on which the reporting is unanimous; the fire's origin remains unexplained in the material available.
