The Ragusa section of Italy's union for the blind will offer free eye checks and a prevention conference on 8 October, with bookings confined to three afternoons.

Ragusa's blind union opens free eye screening before World Sight Day

Bookings for free eye examinations in Ragusa open on Monday 5 October and close on Wednesday 7 October, with appointments taken between 15:00 and 17:00 at the Uici eye clinic in via Perlasca. The offer comes from the provincial section of the Unione Italiana dei Ciechi e degli Ipovedenti and is timed to World Sight Day, which falls on Thursday 8 October. Only those three afternoons are available. The association describes the exercise as a first screening of eye health, open to all citizens rather than only those already living with sight loss, and patients may book in person or by contacting the clinic.

The screening is one half of a two-part programme. On 8 October the Ragusa branch will also hold a conference on the prevention of eye pathologies. Two of the reports carrying the announcement state that neither the time nor the venue of that meeting has yet been made public, leaving the practical details of the day incomplete. Nationally, World Sight Day is promoted by the Fondazione Iapb Italia Ets, with the support of the Uici and under the Alto Patronato of the Presidency of the Republic; the Ragusa section adheres as a local participant.

Salvatore Albani, president of Uici Ragusa, frames the initiative as an attempt to change behaviour rather than simply supply a service. Prevention, he said, is "the first and most important instrument for defending sight and guaranteeing a better quality of life". He added that checks are too often postponed or underestimated, while many eye pathologies can be tackled effectively if identified in time. The stated aim, in his words, is not only to offer a free service but to spread a culture of prevention, since looking after one's eyes means investing in one's wellbeing and autonomy. He said the theme concerns the entire population, not only those who already have sight problems.

The window is short. Bookings run only across the afternoons of 5, 6 and 7 October, and Albani urged anyone wanting a check to register within it. Two of the outlets carrying the announcement date their reports to 3 October 2026. What remains to be confirmed is the conference's hour and address; those details, once published, will complete the programme.
