Anas installs two cameras on SS 194 to curb waste dumping at rest stops
The road operator has handed two surveillance devices on the Ragusa–Modica route to the local council, which will pursue offenders through its municipal police force.

Anas has completed the installation of two cameras on the SS 194 between Ragusa and Modica, aimed at the illegal abandonment of municipal solid waste along the road network. The company reported the works finished on 1 October; the development was carried in reports published in the first days of October 2026.
The devices occupy two specified stopping areas inside the territory of the Comune di Ragusa: one at kilometre 91.000 on the right-hand side, the other at kilometre 90.400 on the left. Roughly 600 metres separate them. They sit on the same stretch of road but on opposite carriageways, so the two monitored stopping points lie on opposite sides of one section rather than along a single direction of travel. Anas frames the intervention as a way of discouraging conduct that turns rest areas into informal dumps, and of protecting both the environment and the decorum of the infrastructure.
The cameras do not remain with Anas. The company has assigned them to the Comune di Ragusa under a free loan arrangement, and the council will from now on manage the video-surveillance systems. Enforcement falls to the Corpo di polizia municipale, which is to conduct checks on violations and to identify and sanction offenders.
Local reporting describes the sight of sacks, waste and abandoned materials in stopping areas as a frequent one along these roads, and the SS 194 is also referred to as the old Ragusa–Modica route.
Uncertainty remains. The supplied reports are truncated, so the absence of published figures for offences recorded or penalties imposed, and of any stated timetable for a first enforcement action, cannot be read as confirmation that none exists. It is likewise unclear from the available reporting whether the cameras are already recording. What is fixed is the transfer of operational responsibility to the municipal administration; any activation status, offence count or enforcement date would be the next verifiable marker.
